The Vision — A Suggestion by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam
The Sansad Ratna Awards were instituted in 2010 to honour the top-performing Parliamentarians of India. The awards were founded by Prime Point Foundation and the eMagazine PreSense, following a specific suggestion by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India. Dr Abdul Kalam himself launched the first Award event in 2010 through a teleconference.
He believed that the hard work of performing MPs — who contribute significantly to debates and policy-making without disruption — should be recognised by civil society. This vision has guided the awards through 15 editions spanning 15 years.
Institutional Legacy and Reach
Since its inception, the Sansad Ratna Awards have evolved into a prestigious institution of transparency and parliamentary excellence. By the completion of the 15th Edition in July 2025, the Foundation has conferred a total of 143 awards — including individual MPs and Parliamentary Committees — for their exemplary performance in the temple of democracy.
The awards have been recognised by the India Book of Records. The Hon'ble President and Vice President of India invited awardees and organisers for a formal High Tea and photo session in 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the awardees on multiple occasions through official messages.
Objective Selection Process
Selection is strictly performance-linked and data-driven. The data is sourced from official websites of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and compiled by PRS Legislative Research. There is no need for individual nominations by anybody.
